Private & Group Voice Lessons for Singers
As my calendar permits (during the days while I am at home), it is a joy and privilege to have individuals come to my home from across the English world for private lessons. People travel from twenty-one various states (as far as Daytona Beach , St. Petersburg, Orlando, Florida and Toledo, Ohio, New York City, New York, Louisville, Kentucky, Greeley, Colorado, Arkansas, Chicago, IL.). Twenty-one states thus far. Those coming a great distance are guest in our home (611 Raintree Drive, Tyler, Texas, 75703, phone 903 581 0291 - email - voice@vocalfreedom.com, cell 903 363 2366.They fly (or drive) into Tyler, Texas either on American or Continental Airlines and I pick them up and bring them to our home. Lodging and breakfast included in cost for ten one hour lessons which are video and audio taped for additional studies when returning to their home. Cost for ten one hour lessons is $1,000.00. Individuals within a one hundred and fifty mile radius come for lessons intermittently when I am at home. My work takes me across the country teaching seminars, choral workshops, workshops for the speaking voice, and presenting concerts across the English speaking world When working with any voice it is my desire and challenge to help the individual with remedial or repair work as to the need for singing or speaking correctly. For beginners, I guide the singer to understand how to gain a total understanding how the voice is produced correctly. Songs are not immediately assigned if the singer needs to understand the basics for vocal production. During the lesson time, (children eight years through senior adults) it is not my plan to "teach songs!" Any individual with a year's piano lessons or those acclimated with the rudiments of music can help an individual learn a song. My purpose in teaching is helping individuals understand the "mind-body" implications of gaining freedom (with "free flow phonation) in producing a mature, attractive voice correctly as they find their "primal sound!" Also, to become aware how to coordinate the necessary "basic tools" for vocal freedom! Most every individual can sing very attractively when receiving the proper guidance in the production of the vocal instrument.. If you can talk, you can learn to sing very well! In essence, "no one teaches you to sing, you teach yourself!" There are only two reasons (those with all normal physical faculties) why a person does not sing on pitch: they do not think or they do not listen! During these many years teaching full time across America, it has been my great privilege to "tune up" many uncertain singers of all ages in a very few minutes! Praise God! In teaching those who say "they cannot carry a tune," I find that many have a very low self esteem and/or self image of their ability to sing. Lots of individuals (many times years and years ago) were victims of an "emotional scar" and "carried around" with them for many years, and they have been "put down" by those they love. People accept the fact that no one can teach them to overcome their "pity-party" and never trying to overcome this psychological barrier. Individuals who have been helped to sing correctly (who had never sung in their life) include prominent people such as brain surgeons; superintendents of a school districts in a very large metropolitan areas ; medical doctors; ministers; and hundreds from all ages and professions. What a thrill!!!!!! About ten years ago, I discovered that the last thing that leaves the memory bank of an individual with Downs Syndrome are able to sing when they cannot do anything else coherently! So we all need to face the question:" What is my problem about singing?" When we even speak the voice modulates more than an octave with melodious pitches with "highs and lows" while talking. Therefore, the words "tone-deaf and monotone" are misnomer words. The thousands and hundreds of thousands that "sing in the shower" whether they are on pitch or not and have a very deep secret in their hearts and desire to sing well truly astounds me because they are not willing to allow others to hear their voices! What a deep overwhelming joy to help individuals find their true voice! One of the most grieving experiences in my work is when I encounter individuals that have degrees in music, sang a recital and yet never found the simple concepts and techniques of establishing correct tonal production with proper energy source; free-flow phonation; full throated ease; establishing the singer's formant; purifying all vowel sounds; exploding all consonants to create "SUPER PRONUNCIATION OF EMOTIONALIZED SPEECH BEAUTIFULLY SUSTAINED!" Also, those who used to sing well seemed to deteriorate through the years. What happens is people begin to establish bad habits and allow the abnorm to be accepted as the norm. I have encountered this problem across America in my teaching. What excitement and deep rewarding thrill to help individuals gain an understanding how to "bring back" the voice of yesteryear. The main difficulty in my teaching those with previous training is breaking down deeply engrained habits and helping the individual "establishing correct production!" We do not break habits! We place them with new ones! A person has to be willing to "free their personal aesthetic judgment".....those incorrect pre- conceived ideas they consider the norm! REMEMBER!!! We do not train the voice.....we train the Brain. When I am invited to conduct "Master Voice Classes" in Universities, I ask that the best singers are not used. I want the thrill of helping those voices that have problems and help them with trenchant, practical techniques for producing loveliness with a smooth vocal line with the singing process.
The former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Oliver Wendell Holmes, made a very sad statement: "MOST PEOPLE DIE WITH THE MUSIC STILL IN THEM!" What a very sad statement. Certainly, there is a great voice in every individual who is willing to seek guidance in finding the beauty innately with their vocal instrument deep inside in their being. Most people use more than an octave while speaking. As stated earlier: "monotone and tone deaf" are really misnomer words that are truly wrong. Come and study with me or encourage a group to sponsor a VOCAL FREEDOM SEMINAR where you can begin to understand how the voice can be correctly produced with total freedom. Call my office 1 903 581 0291 or 1 800 256 2383 and make arrangements for a series of comprehensive lessons that can help you "bloom where you are planted" and discover that down deep in every individual lies the opportunity to discover a very beautiful voice with correct vocal production. Run from those teachers that just want to teach you songs! The reason: "PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT!" When one continues to sing incorrectly, the sound becomes indelibly programmed in the brain that the singer thinks is correct, and it becomes a habit. We do not break habits. We replace them with "new ones" with the teacher's guiding the student. |
