How to
Sponsor a Seminar for Singers
- Minimum requirements for
registration is a guaranteed minimum of forty (40) pre-paid/pre-registered at $25.00 per
person - up to eighty, or eighty (80) minimum and above at $15.00 per person.
- Travel (round trip from
Tyler) lodging (motel or home with private bath), and meals
provided by seminar sponsors..
- Radio interviews with local
stations are a "must" to help make the seminar a
success. It is a most helpful tool in exposing the community to
have the opportunity to register. Mr. Holcomb will furnish a radio
questionnaire sheet for the interviewer to ask intelligent
questions. I will call the radio station for the
interview after the host arranges an interview time on his nickel.
Arrangements for the interview should be made at least three weeks
before the seminar. This helps people make plans to attend.
Also, since singing is enjoyed by everyone, most stations usually are
more than willing to set a time for the interview. Several
"bartering" tools:
- 1. The seminar host will
pay for several thirty (30) second promotional spots.
-
- 2. Allow all announcers to
come to the seminar as our guests. This will help greatly as a
bartering tool for stations to allow for a special interview.
- For the local newspaper, Mr. Holcomb will furnish a glossy
print of himself to be used along with the suggested "Feature
Article" he will provide. A good suggestion most helpful is
to ask a reporter from the local paper call me at 1 800 256 2383
and have them use the same questionnaire
sheet you send to all radio stations! This really makes a very
informative feature article that stirs great interest for people from
your area to attend your seminar.
- The person in charge of the
seminar will want to compose a "cover letter" with church/
university/school stationary. (I encourage you
to use "circled paragraphs on my promotional material) on
your organizations letterhead to all denominational churches and schools
and universities in
the community and surrounding areas. Additional promotional
materials will be sent to the host for promotional use, such as personal
testimony letters from other churches. The letter addressed
"DEAR FELLOW CHOIR MEMBERS" should be duplicated for choir
members from all churches, schools, and universities.
- Those attending the seminar are
eligible to sign up for a private voice lesson. Cost for the
thirty (30) minute lesson is $50.00. Only registrants for the
seminar are eligible to take private lessons. Each person signed up for a
private lesson will need to bring a blank VHS video tape. If the
sponsoring organization has a different camera,
they will be notified before the seminar is over. Each voice
student will need to come thirty (30) minutes early to observe the preceding
lesson. The seminar host is required to observe every lesson if
possible. Mr. Holcomb does not teach a lady without someone in the
room.
- No video or audio recording of
the seminar will be allowed.
- If possible, the seminar should
be held where the registrants may be seated at tables. It is more
efficient for note taking. People are encouraged to take lots of
trenchant notes. The host organization
will receive a packet for all registrants. In this packet are
several pages of "blank fill-ins" that are most important for
people to learn about the vocal process.
- Mr. Holcomb uses a large number
of very important overhead transparencies (a picture is worth ten
thousand words) . Therefore, an overhead projector (with extra
bulb) will need to be set up for his teaching. A light colored wall or
very large screen will be needed. Also, about fifteen blank
transparencies will be needed for Mr. Holcomb during his teaching.
- A well tuned piano will need to
be located near the teaching area.
- NAME TAGS
WITH FIRST NAME ONLY (LARGE MAGIC
MARKER PLEASE).
- With large groups registering,
please have several lines for a more efficient , faster way of
registering the group attending. The same holds true for the
refreshment lines!
- Mr. Holcomb will be sending a
special sheet for signing up those wanting to have a private
voice
lesson.
- A refreshment break is most is
most enjoyable for the middle of each three hour session. No more
than ten minutes please. Mr. Holcomb requests that sliced veggies
and fruit be provided. Also, he asked that no sweets or dairy
products be served.
- Pencils and blank paper need to
be provided for all registrants.
- Good ventilation and lighting
will need to be provided, however, dark light for the wall for the
overhead.
- In one of your promotional
mail-outs, be sure and mention that individuals are not called on to
sing by themselves! Only volunteers are used in front of the
class. People are really amazed and shocked at the unusual
progress that the volunteers make in a very short time while being
taught by Mr. Holcomb. More than thirty (30) years of constant
study since serving as a college professor has paid great dividends
helping people understand how to find their primal sound with free-flow
phonation and also acquiring the "singers formant" during
these years full time on the road has been an unusual, exciting
reward. Many thousands of teachers can teach songs, but how many
can help and individual learn how to produce a "free voice?"
- The vocal study album "BASIC
TOOLS FOR VOCAL FREEDOM" either in cassette or CD packaging will be
available at the seminar.
- People are not registered unless
they "pre-pay" at least a day before the seminar.
People will tell you they will come and sign up - then give a flimsy
excuse for not attending after the seminar. So registering for the
seminar means to also "pre-pay", otherwise people will
disappoint you. This has been experienced by many directors.
- PLEASE DO NOT TAKE LIGHTLY THE IMPORTANCE OF
ADEQUATE PUBLICITY AND PROMOTION. THE PERSON IN CHARGE OF REGISTRATION WILL NEED TO COVER
ALL AREAS TO HAVE A SUCCESSFUL SEMINAR.
